After Google’s hummingbird update long tail keywords are on everyone’s priority list. It involves targeting highly specific search terms. Long tail keywords were introduced to bring in more accurate results. But the question on everyone’s mind is how to identify long tail keywords that are valuable?
Here’s how you can find it:
Just Google the search term – This is one of the simplest ways of figuring out the keyword your users would search for. Just type the search term in Google’s search box and you will get suggestions. These keywords may not have high search volume but they definitely have higher quality than general keywords and they appear because your users are looking for them.
Check out the search query report – Search query reports display the exact queries that target your ads along with number of visits, cost, and revenue associated with each query. It shows the search queries that made people click your ads, rather than your organic search results. You will also get fuller access to the data than your organic refers in Google analytics. It also makes it easy for you to see the keywords that are driving conversation and not just traffic. You can also access a search query report by clicking on the keywords tab and then on the details. Then select “selected” or ‘all’.
Use different keyword research tools – It’s best to try out different keyword research tools to get variations on keywords. Though Google Keyword Tool is one of the best tools for keyword research you can try out WordStrem’s Free Keyword Tool, Google Trends and social media tools like Twitter search, YouTube keyword tool etc.
Getting to the keywords tool is not enough; you will have to use the correct settings to make the most of these tools. For example include a few terms to base your search, then make sure to exclude the terms you do not want in your long tail keyword. This process will bring up new keywords ideas for you.
Look for the organic terms you rank for – You must look for organic traffic coming to your website. However, organic traffic is highly competitive. You can create a list of these long tail keywords, create variations and add them to your keywords list.
The webmaster tool is quite effective too. All you have to do is log into the webmaster tool and select the websites you want to work on. A menu will open and you will be able to see the search queries by clicking on search traffic.
Target local user – Unless you are aiming to grab the attention of global audience you must try to focus upon the local users. Local audience will always search using their city name so it’s important for you to get the right geo targeting keywords that your local users will look for. Though it is not a popular method used as it generates low search volume keywords but it’s something you should consider if you are targeting a niche geographic area.
